Can a home battery run my AC during an outage?

Sometimes, but not easily. A central AC is one of the hardest loads in a house. The startup draw is far higher than the running draw, and the unit may run for long stretches in Tucson heat. A battery can power a small ductless unit for a while. It may struggle to carry a full central system for long, depending on the battery and the AC. Climate Pros Tucson can match you with a licensed pro to size the two together.

Why Tucson owners ask

The monsoon runs June 15 to September 30, and the hazards the National Weather Service ties to it include strong winds, dust storms, lightning and flash flooding. Storms can interrupt power in peak heat, when about 68 days a year reach 100F or higher. The July normal low is 76.3F, so a house doesn’t cool off on its own at night.

For older adults, the CDC advises staying in air-conditioned buildings in hot weather and not relying on a fan as the main cooling when it is very hot. If someone in your house is at risk, plan for outages before the storm.

What matters in the sizing

  • The AC’s running and startup demand. A soft starter or hard-start kit lowers the startup surge. See hard start kit for HVAC.
  • How long you need to run. A plan to keep one room cool is easier than one to keep a whole house cool.
  • Whether the battery can power the AC and the rest of the house.

Ask the pro to size the load and the battery together, in writing.

Time-of-use and incentives

A battery can shift usage out of peak periods. TEP’s summer on-peak runs weekdays 3 to 7 p.m., May to September. Whether that saves money depends on your plan and your system, so ask the installer to work through your plan. The federal 25D credit ended for property placed in service after 2025. Ask a tax professional about anything else.

What to do first

A cheaper step is often a tune-up and a better thermostat. See lower your AC bill in a Tucson summer and AC not working after a power outage. For the rooftop-solar side, see AC and solar with TEP net billing. Service pages: AC installation and emergency HVAC. Area overview: Tucson HVAC hub.
