Does rooftop solar cover a Tucson AC load?

Partly, and the timing matters more than the panel count. Solar output peaks around midday, while a Tucson house keeps cooling long after sunset. At Tucson International Airport the July normal low is 76.3F (1991-2020 normals), so the AC still runs at night when the panels make nothing. How much of your AC use the panels cover depends on your system size, your rate plan and how your utility credits what you send back to the grid.

Climate Pros Tucson is a referral service for HVAC, not solar. Solar contracts go through a solar company.

When is electricity most expensive on TEP?

TEP residential customers are on time-of-use pricing, with alternative plans: Basic, Peak Demand and Demand TOU. On the TOU plan, as listed by TEP, summer on-peak runs May to September, Monday to Friday, 3 to 7 p.m. Winter on-peak runs October to April, Monday to Friday, 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Check TEP’s time-of-use page for current details and for holiday rules.

The summer on-peak window falls in the part of the day when AC is working hardest and solar output starts to fade. That’s the gap to plan around.

How does net billing work?

Under net billing, solar power is used in the home first and whatever you send to the grid earns an export credit. The export rate is different from the rate you pay, and it changes, so read the current figure from TEP or your solar contract. Ask your installer for the export rate in writing and how it compares with what you pay from 3 to 7 p.m. on a summer weekday.

How can AC use line up better with solar?

  • Pre-cool the house before the on-peak window, then let the thermostat coast. A smart thermostat installation makes that easier.
  • Choose a high-efficiency heat pump so each kilowatt-hour cools more. Read the SEER2 rating and ask the pro what it means for your home. See what is SEER2.
  • Seal ducts and fix airflow first. ENERGY STAR says a typical house can lose about 20% to 30% of duct air to leaks, which is a national figure, not a Tucson measurement.
  • Size the solar array from your actual cooling use (your TEP bills show it), not a guess.

What incentives apply?

The federal 25D credit for residential solar ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Arizona’s solar energy device credit in A.R.S. 43-1083 is 25% of cost, with a $1,000 maximum, so ask a tax professional whether you qualify. For HVAC, TEP’s Efficient Home Program lists up to $720 for a heat pump quality installation as of October 2026.
