Whether an extended warranty pays off depends on what you already have, what the new coverage adds, and who does the work. This page offers no buy-or-skip verdict, and the FTC doesn’t either. It gives you a way to compare, and Climate Pros Tucson can match you with a licensed pro to look at your paperwork. In Tucson, equipment runs hard, so labor coverage and claim terms deserve extra attention.
What does my equipment warranty already cover?
Start with the manufacturer’s written warranty. Carrier currently offers eligible replacement residential equipment either ten-year parts coverage or five-year parts plus three-year labor. The labor option needs a participating installing dealer and has to be chosen within 90 days. New construction is excluded. Trane’s base and registered limited warranties cover manufacturer-defect parts and exclude labor, and an optional extended warranty may cover labor. Terms vary by product, so read the certificate for your model.
Those deadlines matter. Missing a registration or selection window can cost coverage you would have had.
How is a service contract different?
A warranty comes with the product. A service contract is a separate purchase. The FTC says to compare overlap with coverage you already hold, total price, deductibles, exclusions, who administers claims, and who does the repair. It also advises you to read the written warranty before buying, keep it with the receipt, and get oral promises in writing.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it duplicate the manufacturer’s parts coverage? | You may pay twice for the same protection |
| Does it cover labor? | Parts-only coverage leaves the labor bill with you |
| Who chooses the repair company? | Network limits can slow a summer repair |
| What are the exclusions? | Wear items, refrigerant, or maintenance lapses may be excluded |
| What is the deductible per visit? | It adds up over repeated calls |
| Does it require proof of maintenance? | You may need records |
Why does Tucson change the math?
Airport normals show about 158 days a year with a high at or above 90F and about 68 at or above 100F. That’s a long cooling season, so the AC works harder than in a mild climate and a coverage gap can matter. Keep maintenance records, because a plan may ask for them. See HVAC maintenance plans and how long an AC lasts in Tucson.
A home warranty plan is a different product. See does a home warranty cover HVAC.
What should I do before I buy?
- Find the manufacturer’s warranty paperwork and any registration deadline.
- Ask the installing pro what labor coverage, if any, comes with the install.
- Get the service contract in writing and read the exclusions.
- Ask whether a repair would be done by a pro of your choice.
