A smell from your AC is a clue, and in Tucson the cause often ties to monsoon moisture, dust or a swamp cooler. Gas or electrical-burning smells are the exception: stop and get help. Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed pro for the rest.

Why does my AC smell musty after the monsoon?

Because the air got wet. At the airport, average dew points jump from the 20s into the high 50s in July and August. That moisture ends up on the cooling coil and in the drain pan, and a system that’s slow to dry out can smell musty. A dirty filter makes it worse. The monsoon runs June 15 through September 30, so you may notice it late in the season. Our monsoon humidity guide explains the pattern.

Why does my system smell like burning when I first turn on the heat?

Dust settles on heating parts during the long cooling season. The first heat of the year can burn it off. A short, mild dusty smell is common. A strong or lasting smell, or any smoke, means shut it off.

What about an evaporative cooler?

Swamp coolers can smell musty when the pads are old or the pan stays wet. Tucson Water says hard water builds calcium deposits in evaporative coolers and advises regularly changing the pads and adding an in-line filter. If the smell only shows up when the cooler runs, the pads and pan are the place to start.

Is it safe to keep running the AC?

For a mild musty smell, usually yes while you arrange a visit. For a burning-plastic smell, shut it off. For a rotten-egg smell, leave the house and call 911 and Southwest Gas from outside.

How can you prevent smells?

Change the filter on schedule, keep the drain clear and keep a record. Our indoor air quality guide covers the dust side.
