If your smart thermostat says Cooling but the house stays hot, first prove the outdoor unit is running. If it is, the thermostat isn’t the problem. If it isn’t, the thermostat may be the problem. Climate Pros Tucson can match you with a licensed pro once you know which side failed.
How do you tell if the system is actually cooling?
Go outside and check that the condenser fan is spinning and the unit is humming. Then check the vents indoors. Air should feel clearly cool. An app showing a cooling icon only means the thermostat asked for cooling. It doesn’t prove the system answered.
What can fake a cooling failure?
Setpoint or schedule. Schedules, away modes and geofencing can raise the setpoint when you didn’t expect it. Check the schedule for the current time.
Sun on the thermostat. Afternoon sun on a thermostat wall can make it read warmer than the room, so the display looks like the house is losing ground. Moving it to an interior wall is a pro job.
A long run on a hot day. The City of Tucson’s summer design temperature is 105F. On an afternoon near that, a correctly sized system can run for long stretches without shutting off. That alone isn’t a failure.
Wi-Fi and the app. The app can lag or lose connection. The thermostat itself still controls the system.
C-wire trouble. Smart thermostats need steady power. A missing or weak common wire can cause restarts, dropped signals and odd behavior. Our smart thermostat installation guide covers it.
Wrong system type. A heat pump needs the right settings for reversing valve and aux heat. A wrong setup on a new thermostat can leave you without cooling.
Dead batteries. Some models use batteries, and a dying set causes erratic behavior.
What if the thermostat is fine?
Then the system has a fault. Common causes include a dirty filter, a failed capacitor, a tripped breaker, low refrigerant or a frozen coil. A roof package unit adds its own checks, like the disconnect and the roof-level breaker, which a pro should handle. Read AC not turning on and AC blowing warm air.
A quick checklist
- Confirm mode is Cool and the setpoint is below room temperature.
- Check the schedule, away mode and geofencing.
- Change the batteries if the unit takes them.
- Check the filter and the breaker.
- Go outside and see whether the condenser runs.
- Restart the thermostat using its menu, not the breaker.
Should you replace the thermostat?
Only after testing the system. Swapping a thermostat on a system that has failed doesn’t fix the system. If the thermostat does need work, see thermostat installation and thermostat repair or replacement. The Tucson hub lists our coverage.
