What is the best way to cool a pool house in Tucson?

A ductless mini split is the usual answer. It cools one space without ductwork, it can heat as well, and it handles a building that isn’t tied to the main house. The right size depends on the room, the sun and the insulation, which a pro calculates rather than guesses.

Why is sizing different for a pool house?

A pool house or enclosed ramada often has large glass doors, little insulation and strong sun on one side. The City of Tucson’s summer design temperature is 105F, and the airport averages about 68 days a year at or above 100F, so the room takes a hard hit. An undersized unit will run constantly. An oversized one cools quickly and may leave the air clammy. Ask the pro for a load calculation for the room.

What about humidity from the pool?

Tucson’s air is dry most of the year, so a pool house usually isn’t a humidity problem. The monsoon is different. At the airport, average dew points jump from the 20s into the high 50s in July and August. A mini split pulls moisture out as it cools, so a correctly sized one helps. Keep the pool equipment area ventilated and ask the pro how the unit handles condensate.

What does power and permitting involve?

  • The mini split needs a dedicated circuit. A licensed R-39 contractor may add a circuit to an existing panel but may not install a new service panel or sub-panel, so a detached building may need an electrician for that part.
  • The City of Tucson requires a permit for new and replacement air conditioners, and the contractor pulls it.
  • Placement of the outdoor unit and line set matters for noise and sun. See concealing mini split lines.

Are there rebates?

As listed by TEP in October 2026, mini split heat pumps or ACs can carry up to $100 per ton through a participating Efficient Home contractor. Confirm with TEP or the contractor at quote time.

What other options exist?

A window or portable unit needs no line set, but it’s louder in the room, gives up a window or floor space, and has to fight the same glass and sun. See mini split vs window unit and mini splits for casitas and guest houses. For cost framing see ductless mini split cost.
