What decides the price of a new AC in Tucson?
The size of the system, its efficiency rating, the type of equipment, how hard the install is and what the permit and refrigerant requirements add. Climate Pros Tucson doesn’t set prices. Each licensed pro quotes their own, so the number that counts is the one on a written quote. Here are the lines a good quote should show for the cooling side alone. Replacing the furnace or air handler too is a bigger quote, covered in HVAC replacement cost in Tucson.
What do national cost guides list for a new AC?
Two national cost guides give a starting point, and neither is a Tucson price. HomeGuide lists $5,000 to $8,300 for a standard-efficiency AC replacement and $8,300 to $12,500 for a mid-range unit installed, and says high-efficiency systems can reach $14,000+ with installation, as national figures (checked October 2026). HomeAdvisor lists $3,887 to $8,073 for professional AC installation, unit and labor, nationwide (checked October 2026). The two publishers measure different scopes, so read them side by side, not as one range. The written quote from the pro is the number that counts for your home.
Which lines should a written quote include?
| Quote line | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Tonnage | How was the size chosen? |
| Efficiency rating | What are the SEER2 and EER2 numbers for this exact model? |
| Equipment type | Split system or rooftop package unit? |
| Roof work | Is a crane needed, and who pays for it? |
| Permit | Is the permit included, and who pulls it? |
| Refrigerant | Which type does the new equipment use? |
| Removal | Is old equipment haul-away in the price? |
| Warranty | What does the manufacturer cover, and for how long? |
How should the pro size it?
By calculation, not by matching the old unit. The City of Tucson requires load and sizing calculations for new and replacement HVAC equipment, and the City lists summer design conditions of 105F dry bulb and 66F wet bulb for its code. An oversized unit short cycles and wears out sooner. Read what size AC you need in Tucson.
What is SEER2, and does Arizona have a minimum?
SEER2 is a seasonal cooling-efficiency rating in Btu per watt-hour. The Department of Energy moved to updated testing (SEER2, EER2, HSPF2) and regional minimums effective January 1, 2023, and Arizona sits in the Southwest region. Ask the pro to show the rating for the model on the quote. Savings depend on how you use the system. See what SEER2 means.
Split or rooftop package unit?
Some Tucson homes have a rooftop package unit and some have a split system with an outdoor condenser. Which one replaces which depends on your ducts, roof and layout. A package replacement may need a crane. A split swap may involve the indoor coil too. HomeAdvisor notes that roof-mounted HVAC “costs up to $1,000 more for labor,” as a national figure (checked October 2026). That’s a labor figure, not a crane charge, and the pro’s written quote is what counts. Compare both in package unit versus split system.
Does the refrigerant type matter?
Yes, ask. Under the EPA rule, new residential AC and heat pump equipment has a global warming potential limit of 700 from 2025. Equipment whose parts were all made before 2025 can still be installed, and existing R-410A systems can still be serviced. Don’t accept “R-410A is banned” as a sales line.
Who pulls the permit?
The City of Tucson requires a permit for a new or replacement air conditioner. The contractor pulls it, not Climate Pros Tucson. A quote with no permit line is a question to ask.
Inside City of Tucson limits, the City’s fee schedule effective July 1, 2026 lists a $150 trade permit for an air conditioner or heater repair or replacement (checked October 2026). In unincorporated Pima County, the Development Services fee schedule effective July 1, 2026 lists a $69 base fee for permits that need an inspection and $27 for minor mechanical work such as a residential air conditioner unit, as separate line items (checked October 2026). Oro Valley, Marana, Sahuarita and South Tucson set their own fees, so ask the pro which applies. Either way, the permit fee belongs on the contractor’s written quote, and that quote is the number that counts.
Can a rebate lower the price?
Possibly. As listed by TEP in October 2026, the Efficient Home Program shows up to $600 for AC quality installation through a participating contractor. Confirm with TEP or the pro. See TEP and Arizona rebates.
