Why is my mini split not cooling?

A mini split that won’t cool usually comes down to a short list: a dirty filter, a dirty outdoor coil, a blocked drain, an error code or a failed control board. Start with the simple checks, which you can do yourself. Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed pro for the rest.

Dust is the first suspect

Desert dust builds up between storms, and dust storms occur in the monsoon. A mini split moves air through a fine filter behind the front panel. When it clogs, airflow drops, the room cools badly and the coil can ice over.

  • Switch the unit off and open the front panel.
  • Pull the filters, rinse them and let them dry fully.
  • Check the outdoor unit. Dust, leaves and cottonwood-type fluff can mat on the coil fins.
  • Keep plants and gravel spray away from the outdoor unit.

Water dripping from the indoor head

A mini split drains condensate through a small line. It can clog with dust or sag so water backs up and drips from the head. Monsoon dew points in the high 50s mean more water to remove. See mini split head dripping water for the detail.

Error codes

Blinking lights or a code on the remote display mean the unit has logged a fault. The code’s meaning depends on the brand and model. Look it up in the manual, note it, and give it to the pro. A code can point to a sensor, a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units, or a control board. Don’t clear it repeatedly. Repeated restarts can hide the pattern the pro needs.

Failures that need a pro

  • Indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit never starts.
  • Ice on the indoor coil or on the refrigerant line outside.
  • A burning smell, scorching on the wiring or a tripped breaker.
  • Refrigerant concerns. Anyone who services refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification.
  • Control board faults. A board that fails in the heat of summer is a pro job.

Repair or replace

If the unit is old, repeated faults point to replacement, and the matched pro can say which. Ask for the model number, the fault and the repair quote in writing.
