Check the batteries first, then the breaker, then the wiring at the thermostat’s backplate. On a battery-powered Honeywell, dead batteries blank the screen, and swapping them is the cheapest check there is. Climate Pros Tucson isn’t Honeywell support, but we can match you with a licensed local pro when the problem is deeper than a battery.
Why is the screen blank?
Work down this list:
- Batteries. Models that use AA batteries go dark when they die. Replace both.
- Breaker or furnace switch. A tripped breaker or an off switch at the air handler cuts power to the low-voltage transformer that powers the thermostat.
- Blown low-voltage fuse. Many air handler boards have a small fuse that protects the thermostat circuit. A pro should replace it and find the short.
- Loose wire at the backplate. Pull the thermostat off the wall and check each wire sits firmly in its labeled terminal.
- No C-wire on a Wi-Fi model. Connected models need steady power, and homes without a common wire can show a blank or rebooting screen.
Take a photo of the wiring before you touch anything. Turn the power off at the breaker before you handle wires.
Why does it say Cool On but nothing happens?
Wait a few minutes. Many systems hold the outdoor unit for a short delay after a power flicker, which protects the compressor. If the delay passes and no cool air arrives, check the outdoor disconnect and the drain float switch. Monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30, and storms can trip power, so see AC not turning on in Tucson for the full checklist.
Why won’t the thermostat respond to buttons?
Try a reset: remove the faceplate, pull the batteries for a minute, and put them back. If a Wi-Fi model still won’t connect, confirm your router works and the thermostat is within range. A thermostat that works but a system that doesn’t points to equipment, not the control.
Does the thermostat cause the AC to run constantly?
Sometimes. A thermostat set to Fan On, a misplaced sensor or a stuck relay can keep the system running. In Tucson heat, long runtime is also normal on very hot afternoons. The summer design temperature in the City of Tucson’s code is 105F, so on a hotter day a system may run steadily. Read why an AC won’t turn off in Tucson to tell the difference.
When should you replace the thermostat?
Replace it when it fails after the checks above, or when you want a model that suits your TEP time-of-use plan. See thermostat installation and AC repair.
