What does a furnace blower motor do?
The blower motor spins the fan that pushes air through your ducts. In Tucson, the same blower moves cooled air in summer, so one failing part can affect both heating and AC. If the blower is weak, noisy or won’t start, the house gets little air whether the heat or the cooling is on.

What are the signs of a failing blower motor?
- Weak airflow from the vents
- Humming, grinding or squealing from the indoor unit
- The blower not starting when the thermostat calls
- The motor shutting off after a short run, which can be overheating
- A burning smell near the indoor unit. Shut the system off and call a pro.
Is it the motor or something else?
Several things look the same:
| Symptom | Could also be |
|---|---|
| Weak airflow | Dirty filter, blocked return, dirty blower wheel |
| Humming but no spin | Failed capacitor |
| Won’t start | Thermostat, control board or tripped breaker |
| Shuts off early | Limit switch tripped by restricted airflow |
Check the filter first, especially after a monsoon dust storm. See furnace blowing cold air and AC fan motor not spinning. A capacitor is often the smaller fix; see AC capacitor replacement.
Why does Tucson’s heat matter here?
The blower runs for long stretches in summer. Tucson averages about 68 days a year at or above 100F, and July nights still average 76.3F (1991-2020 normals at the airport), so the blower gets little rest. A motor that’s weak in spring is headed into its hardest months. That’s why a spring check is worth it. See the pre-summer tune-up checklist.
Should you repair or replace the motor?
The pro can tell you whether the motor, the capacitor or the control is at fault. The price is set by the contractor, and we don’t publish one. If the unit is old and other parts are failing, ask for a repair-or-replace comparison. See repair or replace your AC.
